Core Strength

E-mail Print PDF
Your core includes the muscles making up your “anatomical girdle”: your abdominals and lower back muscles.

These muscles provide spinal support and postural physique: they help you twist, turn, lift, stabilize and balance. Core stability is important for the martial artist as kicking, striking, directional changes during sparring and ground work are all moves that stem from the core.

Strong core muscles will improve movement in many sports: from golf to skiing. Even if you are not an athlete, everyone can benefit from a stronger core. Improved balance and stability are useful in daily activity, and core muscles aid in improving posture and thus helping with lower back pain and injury prevention.

  • Always consult a physician before beginning an exercise program. Discontinue an exercise if you feel any pain or discomfort.
