Some of the principal components of fitness: cardiovascular fitness, muscular and bone strength, flexibility and a healthy body composition (body fat to lean muscle mass ratio) are vital to the overall health of kids. Here are just a few reasons why exercise should be encouraged during youth:

  • Reduce the risk of cardiovascular disease and high blood pressure

  • Reduce the risk of developing certain types of diabetes

  • Improves mental health: reduces depression and anxiety

  • Helps strengthen and maintain healthy, strong and flexible joints

  • Increases mind-body awareness

  • Builds self esteem

  • Teaches useful skills

  • Encourages friendships and social interactions

Sports are a popular way to introduce kids to exercise: try them out in soccer, swimming, track and field, winter sports, gymnastics or martial arts...there is a lot to choose from. Remember that if you develop healthy exercise habits during youth, you tend to maintain those habits into adult-hood.
