STRENGTH TRAINING FOR YOUR SPORT PDF Print E-mail
 Do you play sports or do a physical activity on a regular basis? Perhaps you cycle, ski, dance, play hockey or tennis or compete in martial arts. Whatever your sport, and your level of participation, you might want to consider adding some strength training to your program.  

Strength training is beneficial for most people, whether they play sports or not, but for the recreational or professional athlete it is that much more important to add it to your conditioning program. With regular strength training you will find that your sport performance becomes better and more efficient. Here are a few reasons why athletes should strength train:

  • Improve strength

  • Improve power

  • Improve joint stability (thus decreasing chances of injury)

  • Rehabilitate from injuries faster and better

  • Improve posture

  • Improve metabolism

  • Help maintain a healthy body weight

  • Feel better

  • Stay healthier


Along with healthy eating, a good cardiovascular and flexibility program you will definitely see improvement in your sport. General strength training is great but you should focus on sport specific strength training as well: see a Personal Trainer or Exercise specialist to help you design an individualized program.

COACH AND ROLE MODEL: ONE AND THE SAME
 I remember a cartoon in a coaching text book that illustrated a confident soccer coach taking large strides in a field and leaving his footprints after each step. A few steps behind him was a young soccer athlete, trying to walk in the footprints of the coach… this was not so much of a walk, but rather a leap from step to step. There was no caption necessary to this cartoon as it most effectively illustrated how a young athlete was modeling himself after his coach, trying to keep up in his footsteps.
