Pilates is named after Joseph Pilates who was born in Germany in 1881. Pilates developed a new exercise system in the 1920’s while working in a hospital helping patients rehabilitate from bed-ridden conditions (such as influenza which had a massive outbreak in 1918).

Pilates used his knowledge of the human body, as well as his knowledge of fitness and sport (he was well versed in boxing, martial arts, swimming and gymnastics to name a few) to create an exercise system that has grown in popularity since that time. So what is Pilates and why is it so successful?

Pilates puts together controlled breathing with fluid, bio-mechanically efficient movement. Whether doing ‘mat work’ or using special equipment, Pilates can give you a full-body work out. There is very little or no impact at all with Pilates: you will mostly move while standing, sitting, laying on your back or stomach or on your hands and knees.

Some (of the many) benefits of regular Pilates exercise include:

  • Improved strength, flexibility and balance

  • Improved core stability and posture

  • Improved circulation

  • Injury prevention

  • Improved energy levels and stress relief

  • Can provide pain relief and help rehabilitate many injuries or musculoskeletal conditions

  • Improves mind-body awareness

So if you haven’t already, give Pilates a try. Check out classes at local gyms and fitness facilities: find the appropriate level class (beginner, intermediate or advanced) and start to enjoy some of the benefits for yourself!

  • Always consult a physician before beginning an exercise program. Discontinue an exercise if you feel any pain or discomfort.
