DOG WALKING PDF Print E-mail
FITNESS AND FUN  A great way to enjoy the outdoors is with your four legged companions. Taking your dog for regular walks can be beneficial for you both. Here is how:
  • Walking for 30 minutes or longer 3 to 5 times per week is a good part of an exercise program for maintaining (or losing some) weight, improving your heart and lung health and improving muscular (especially leg) strength and bone density...these are important for you and your dog!

  • Stress relief and pleasure: a dog walk is a great way to get outdoors and away from a hectic life...you’ll both enjoy a change of environment!

  • Social Interactions: bonding between you and your dog as well as interactions with other people and their dogs.

Remember to prepare for your dog walks. Ensure you have proper footwear, clothing and sun protection. You will also need a good leash and collar, poop scoop bags (it’s important to clean up after your pet), and water for both you and your dog. Walk with friends for safety or at least let someone know where you are going. If you take your dog into the bush, take bear spray...we are in bear country.

The most important thing is to have fun. It’s a great family event or a quiet outing for you and your best friend. There is nothing better than rattling the leash and seeing your dog do the dance of joy because he knows you are taking him for a walk.
