Taking the plunge this summer will be a great way to improve and complement your martial arts training.

THE FITNESS BENEFITS OF SWIMMING

Now that summer is just around the corner, you may be thinking about a dip in a lake to cool off...or maybe a few dives off the diving tower followed by some laps in your local swimming pool.  Swimming is refreshing and fun; it can be a social event or a solitary getaway for a few hours.  Apart from the mental health benefits, swimming is an excellent form of exercise.  Here are just a few of the reasons why you should take the plunge!

  • Cardiovascular training: swimming laps will increase your heart rate and improve your endurance.
  • Strength: working against the resistance of the water will improve muscular strength and endurance
  • Zero Impact:  Are you recovering from an injury?  Does impact hurt your knees, hips or back?  Swimming is an awesome alternative to impact exercise.
  • Cross Training: Whether you are an elite athlete or a weekend warrior, you might be looking for something to supplement your exercise regime: swimming is an excellent exercise to cross train with just about any sport or activity...including Martial Arts!

If swimming laps doesn’t appeal to you, try an aqua-exercise class instead: there are many classes to choose from depending on preference and ability...check out your local pools.

Always consult a physician before beginning an exercise program.  Discontinue an exercise if you feel any pain or discomfort.
